'All Nighter' Trailer: J.K. Simmons and Emile Hirsch Are an Odd Couple on the Hunt for Missing Woman (Exclusive)
As far as action-comedy duos go, J.K. Simmons and Emile Hirsch probably aren’t the most obvious of pairings. But in the first trailer for their new movie All Nighter, the burgeoning screen buddies show some promise.
Hirsch plays Martin, a struggling Los Angeles banjo player recently dumped by his girlfriend Ginnie (Analeigh Tipton). Her very intimidating father Mr. Gallo (Simmons) turns up one night at Martin’s door. Ginnie’s gone missing, and Gallo wants Martin’s help in tracking her down, which they’ll attempt to do over one very eventful night.
If the premise sounds a bit like a comedic riff on Taken, the 2008 kidnapping thriller that launched a trilogy, the filmmakers are in on the joke. “This happens every day,” Gallo laments. “Like one of those Liam Neeson movies?” Martin asks.
Like Neeson’s character, Gallo has a particular set of skills, as well as his own catchphrase. “I’m in procurement,” he tells Martin. Apparently, whatever “procurement” means, it involves cold-clocking dudes in the face.
Formerly known as The Runaround, All Nighter is directed by Gavin Wiesen (The Art of Getting By) from a script by Seth W. Owen (Morgan) and also stars Taran Killam (Saturday Night Live) and Kristen Schaal (The Daily Show).
The film opens March 17 in Los Angeles, then will expand to additional markets and be available on VOD and digital HD on March 24.
