WASHINGTON, La. (KLFY)– The American Legion Post in Washington needs a complete renovation, but the veterans aren’t able to cover the costs.

The post is hosting a barbeque plate lunch sale Saturday, July 13, to fund much-needed renovations for their building.

The veterans need help repairing Jasper Neyland Post 209, which will cost them between $40,000 to $50,000.

“The mission statement we have is for community service, to not only the community, but to veterans in the community,” St. Cyr said. “We also want to bring our building back up to where it needs to be to be a presentable piece of the community.”

They plan to start the renovations of the over 100-year-old building by replacing the roof, followed by exterior and interior restorations.

“We’re going to have to make some kind of move to get the roof fixed, and I’m not sure what. We really didn’t want to go into debt to do that,” St. Cyr said. “But the longer it goes on, the more damage there is to the house. So, I mean, who knows what the weather’s going to bring.”

The Post has been selling plate lunches the first Saturday of each month. They’re resuming tomorrow after they took the first weekend of July off in observance of the Fourth of July.

In the past, they haven’t been able to sell all of the plate lunches and donated them to St. Joseph’s Diner in Opelousas.

The Post will have chicken and pork barbeque plate lunches for sale tomorrow for $12 each from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Only cash is accepted.

Proceeds will go toward the renovation of Jasper Neyland Post 209.
