Food insecurity is one of the most pressing issues in the Natural State. According to the Department of Agriculture, Arkansas has the highest level of food insecurity in the nation, with one in four children facing hunger. Events like these help to fight that.

One woman who stopped by the drive-thru said although we live in challenging times, it’s moments like these that remind her she’s not alone.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Karen Holloway said. “Yeah, it’s great for the community, you know, to get this free food. It’s just a blessing.”

MLK Commission Executive Director DuShun Scarbrough was helping to direct traffic at the event, saying this type of hands-on service is what they’re all about.

“To be able to bring the masses together so that we can be able to assist individuals in need and to become community liaisons,” Scarbrough said, “That is what we’re here to do today.”

It wasn’t just canned goods that were loaded into cars; proteins, vegetables, and other nutritious items were all on the menu. The event was first-come, first-serve.
