Campus deemed safe by police as armed robbery at UB still under investigation
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A reported armed robbery at UB early Thursday morning is still under investigation as the campus has been deemed safe by UB Police, according to the school.
Police said that two students were approached around 12:40 a.m. Thursday by three unknown people near the Creekside Village Apartment’s on UB’s North Campus. Officials said one person was punched in the head and had their cell phone and wallet stolen, while the other victim reported their jacket was taken.
Police said the victims told them they displayed what appeared to be handguns, but they were possibly fake or plastic weapons.
The three suspects are described as Black males, one wearing a black Nike sweat suit with burgundy shoes, one wearing a black Nike sweat suit with black shoes, and another wearing a grey sweat suit with black shoes. All three wore ski masks.
The victim that was punched was evaluated but declined transport. The other victim was not hurt.
Investigators with UB Police announced Thursday evening that the robbery was determined to be targeted in nature and not a random act of violence.
UB Chief of Police Kim Beaty said that UB campuses are currently safe.
“Although we are unable to release further details as we continue our investigation, I felt it prudent to share this update and make clear there is no on-going threat to our community,” Beaty said.
Increased patrols near Creekside Village and the Ellicott Complex will continue through the weekend as a precaution.
The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call UB Police at (716) 645-2222.
