Arrest made in Springfield murder investigation, Sheriff says
SPRINGFIELD, Ill (WCIA) — The Sangamon County Sheriff’s and State’s Attorney’s Offices have announced an arrest in connection to a Springfield murder that happened over the weekend.
Sheriff Jack Campbell and State’s Attorney John Milhiser said Brandon L. Berner, 23, was identified as a suspect in the murder of Michael Newton on Saturday. An arrest warrant was issued on Monday, charging Berner with three counts of first-degree murder.

At approximately 10:12 p.m. later that day, officials said Berner turned himself in to the Springfield Police Department. Sheriff’s deputies transported him to the Sangamon County Jail, where he awaits a pre-trial detention hearing and arraignment. Both are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
The Sheriff’s Office is still investigating Newton’s murder with assistance from the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s and Coroner’s Offices.
