Ask the Mayor: Chris Scanlon discusses upcoming projects in Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — WIVB News 4’s Kelsey Anderson sat down with Buffalo Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon Wednesday for an “Ask the Mayor” interview, where he discussed the city’s upcoming projects along with a recent increase in unemployment rates.

Scanlon discussed the Heritage Point Project at Canalside that has been stalled for almost a year. He said he hopes the state will give Sinatra & Company an additional $4 million in funding, which they recently asked for, to help finish construction.

“I think if we can get that project moving, it’s a signal that Buffalo is back open for business, we’re pushing forward, we’re moving ahead, we’re nonstop here,” he said. “So I think having that first domino fall, that will be a huge win for the city.”

Recent data from the state showed a .2% increase in the region’s unemployment rate in September. Scanlon said he hopes the rate will rebound next month and that the city will do “everything they can” to partner with public and private sectors to bring more projects to Buffalo.

As for the city’s relationship with Buffalo Public Schools, Scanlon is seeking more communication about what challenges the schools are facing and said officials will “be there to help.”

Anderson asked about ShotClub Social, a golf and entertainment center that may be coming to Buffalo soon. Scanlon responded that he’s excited about the potential of the project and that the city will “do what they can” to make it happen.
