Avelo Airlines to end flights between Binghamton and Orlando in August

Starting Aug. 18, Avelo Airlines will no longer be offering flights between Binghamton and Orlando.

Avelo, which has offered direct flights between Greater Binghamton Airport and Orlando International Airport seasonally twice a week since 2022, announced it would be terminating service between the two airports.

According to Jim Olson, Avelo's Head of Communications, the decision stemmed from the lack of profit generated by the route.

"Unfortunately, the BGM-MCO route was not profitable, and we do not expect it to be within a reasonable time horizon. Every route Avelo flies must be profitable or be on a trend line towards that goal," said Olson. "Before we commit to a new route, we conduct a thorough analysis of any available and relevant data. In most cases, the routes we enter succeed and we continue to operate them. However, with those that do not we must make the difficult decision to exit them."

According to Broome County Executive Jason Garnar, there are plans to continue to introduce new flights and airlines to the airport moving forward.

“While we are disappointed in Avelo’s decision, over twenty thousand passengers flew BGM to Orlando and over 75% percent of available seats were purchased, so clearly there is a lot of enthusiasm locally for this type of air service," said Garnar. "We will continue to engage with airlines to add routes to BGM and we have already reached out to discount airlines since Avelo made their decision to add non-stop service to Florida.”
