BAKER, La. (BRPROUD) — The City of Baker School System is gearing up to welcome students back. The school year begins on Aug. 8, and families can expect big changes such as single-point entry to buildings, virtual attendance and improved communication with buses.

Superintendent J.T. Stroder said safety is a top priority.

“When those students are there during the day, we have them as secure as possible,” he said.

All schools within the district will have improved security, thanks to a $500,000 grant from the federal government.

“Now we’re going to actually move our elementary school into one of those secure buildings as our high school moves into their new facility,” said Stroder.

Students and faculty are set to return to the original Baker High. Severe flooding forced them to move in 2016. The district used the time to get rid of buildings that were too damaged or too old to keep using and redesign the campus.

A new attendance option will be available. Juniors and seniors can now opt into a four-day in-person class schedule and attend virtually on Fridays.

“Those that, you know, haven’t met their graduation requirements, then we’ll use that as an opportunity to kind of pinpoint what it is that they need,” said Stroder.

Along with this, communication between the school and home will improve with a new student information system called Connect.

A new fleet of buses equipped with cameras is also set to roll out.

“There will be no more guessing on when the bus is going to get there. They can see where the bus is and how far away it is,” said Stroder.

As the new school year approaches, the City of Baker School System is ready to provide a safe and supportive environment.
