Back to School 2024: New start times, safety measures at Pointe Coupee schools
NEW ROADS, La. (BRPROUD) — Many families and students can expect to see new changes across each school campus, specifically upgrades and security measures put in place.
Pointe Coupee Schools Superintendent Kim Canezaro said they’ve been changing different areas for faculty and students.
“We have new sidewalks that were added to Rosenwald, and Upper Pointe Coupee and we’ve upgraded our athletic facilities at both Livonia and our magnet academy,” she said.
One major change they began to work on was updating their safety measures across each campus, starting with their STEM Magnet Academy.
“A few years back, we had a needs assessment done by the state police, and one of the things that they suggested that we do in this system is to do a single point entry,” said Canezaro.
Although construction on the single-point entry is still in progress, visitors who step foot on campus must all enter through one door near the school’s office. Aiman Bayoumi, principal of STEM Magnet Academy of Pointe Coupee, said this is to ensure the safety of everyone on the campus.
“It will make, you know, us here at school and the community feel at ease that, you know, that is the only way somebody can come onto the campus,” he said.
The school is also getting a major upgrade on its gym, adding new equipment and bleachers.
Canezaro said parents can also expect new start times for school. Livonia High School will now start at 7:35 a.m., and the remaining schools are set to start an hour later. With schools spread out across the district, she said this will not only benefit bus drivers but students as well, adding that this will help students mentally by creating later start times for students to get ready for school.

“We are geographically spread out and so their bus rides typically tend to be long for some children. So we wanted to address that problem as well,” she said.
Students at Livonia High School will also see some new curriculum, including a new EMT/EMR class in partnership with Acadian Ambulance. Bayoumi said he’s excited to lead all of his students to success for the new year, saying they all have bright futures.
“Students, they think outside the box and they want outside the box. So over here we try to provide more options. Our robotics team just placed nationally at the Beta convention,” he said.
Canezaro said she’s happy that schools are getting upgrades and new changes, saying the students deserve these improvements.
