Back to school: Central Middle School students to get water bottles, school system bans cell phones
CENTRAL, La. (BRPROUD) — Students will be returning to school in early August in the Central Community School System, and here is what you need to know before the new school year begins.
Teachers in the five schools in the school system, including Bellingrath Hills Elementary, Tanglewood Elementary School, Central Intermediate School, Central Middle School and Central High School are returning on Monday, Aug. 5. Students will return on Thursday, Aug. 8.
Jason Fountain, superintendent of the Central Community School System, said there won’t be any major policy changes as they head into the new school year but noted that the student handbook is in the process of being updated.
One of the updates to keep in mind before sending your kids to school is that Central Middle School will be issuing water bottles for this upcoming school year.
“Since COVID, students have been able to bring water bottles,” said Fountain. “The requirement has always been to only bring water. This year, CMS is supplying a water bottle and asking students to use those water bottles.”

According to Fountain, Central Middle School is the only school that will be providing a water bottle. He said, “CMS will be issuing the water bottles as part of their regular school fees.”
“Pre-K-8 students may not drink anything but water during and between classes,” said Fountain. “CMS must have clear CMS branded bottles. Again, the expectation has always been that students only drink water at school.”
The Central Community School system will also be following a new Louisiana law. Act No. 313 states that any cell phone or additional communication devices must be turned off and put away for the entire school day if brought to campus.
“In the past, cell phones have not been allowed in grades K-8,” said Fountain. “That will continue. In high school, students could have them, but not use them.”

Fountain said starting this year, cell phones must be kept out of sight if they are brought to campus for grades 9-12.
According to Fountain, the water bottle and cell phone policy were voted on by the school board during a May 13 meeting.
