Ballad Health: Sycamore Shoals to resume surgeries Thursday

ERWIN, Tenn. (WJHL) — Ballad Health provided an update on medical response unit operations in Erwin, Sycamore Shoals Hospital, early learning centers and more in a media advisory on Tuesday.

Medical response unit operations continue in Erwin, Ballad Health reported. The unit is located in the auditorium parking lot of Unicoi County High School (700 S Mohawk Drive, Erwin).

Ballad said the site provides 24/7 first aid, triage for minor illnesses and injuries and stabilization including the following:

• Basic treatment of infections

• Stabilization and transfer for trauma and serious conditions

• Respiratory and skin infections

Ballad Health announced Tuesday that Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton, one of the hospitals evacuated during floods caused by Hurricane Helene, will resume inpatient operations on Wednesday.

Surgeries at Sycamore Shoals are set to resume on Thursday.

Ballad’s Center for Early Learning in Lebanon, Virginia (554 Clydesway Drive) will resume operations on Wednesday. Greeneville’s center will remain suspended until the water supply in town is stable, Ballad reported.

Ballad Health also provided the following vaccine considerations:

• Tetanus

  • Those who experience cuts, scratches or other injuries while working in cleanup and recovery should ensure their tetanus vaccine is up to date.

  • Either a tetanus vaccine or the TdaP vaccine can be used to protect against tetanus. (TdaP also protects against pertussis).

• Hepatitis A

  • Hepatitis A vaccine is a routinely recommended vaccine for adults and children.

  • Being exposed to floodwater is not a recommendation for this vaccine, but it’s still important to ensure you are up to date with all routinely recommended vaccines.
