Barack And Michelle Obama Offer Warnings About Donald Trump At Democratic National Convention

Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama delivered fiery remarks on night two of the Democratic National Convention, providing both hope for the future, and warnings of another Donald Trump term.

Night two of the DNC went down on Tuesday (Aug. 20) and featured an array of star-power to drive up support for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. The Obamas came through with speeches featuring Michelle abandoning her mantra of “going high” as she delivered a speech that left even America’s 44th President speechless. This version of the First Lady was starkly different than the gentle, yet stern output she delivered at DNCs past—Michelle didn’t come to lose to Trump’s vision of the country; she came to win, demanding that Dems not be their “own worst enemies” and not stand in the way of progress.

“America, hope is making a comeback,” Mrs. Obama asserted. “His limited and narrow view of the world made [Donald Trump] feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who also happened to be Black.”

Michelle then followed Harris and Walz’s previous jabs at Trump and his Vice President, J.D. Vance, in which they called them “weird.” Michelle took Trump to the fire, roasting him for his unfair criticisms of migrants and claiming that they’re “stealing jobs from Black people.”

“Going small is petty, it’s unhealthy, and, quite frankly, it’s unpresidential,” she said, describing Trump’s usual sham. “It’s his same old con: doubling down on ugly, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions that will actually make people’s lives better.”

“We cannot afford for anyone to sit on their hands and wait to be called upon. Don’t complain if no one from the campaign has specifically reached out to ask for your support. There is simply no time for that kind of foolishness,” she added. “Our fate is in our hands.”

Mrs. Obama later got a roaring applause after she firmly stated that Trump would be shocked to know that the job he’s running for is actually “a Black job.”

Michelle then handed the baton to the “love of her life,” Barack Obama, who delivered one of his classic humorous-yet-ominous-yet-hopeful speeches. He declared that the “the torch has been passed” in describing President Joe Biden dropping out of the 2024 election and giving the reigns to Harris.

“America is ready for a new chapter. America’s ready for a better story,” Obama told the roaring crowd. “We are ready for a President Kamala Harris.”

The 35-minute speech was full of statements that echoed his two historic presidential runs, while also looking to the future of America under Harris and Walz. In between this hopeful rallying cry, Mr. Obama made sure to continue roasting Donald Trump, making note of his obsession with crowd sizes.

“[Trump] is a 78-year-old billionaire who hasn’t stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago. It’s been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that’s actually gotten worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala,” he added.

“The childish nicknames and crazy conspiracy theories and weird obsession with crowd size,” he said while holding his hands a few inches apart. “It just goes on and on. The other day, I heard someone compare Trump to the neighbor who keeps running his leaf blower outside your window every minute of every day.”

Toward the end of the speech, Obama got the crowd fired up, once again, as he called for action and called for Democrats to “do something.” Former President Obama then asserted that electing Kamala Harris was the right thing to do to avoid going down another “dark day” in America.

“As much as any policy or program, I believe that’s what we yearn for—a return to an America where we work together and look out for each other,” he said to an attentive audience, hanging on every word. “A restoration of what Lincoln called, on the eve of civil war, ‘our bonds of affection.’ An America that taps what he called ‘the better angels of our nature.’…That’s what this election is about.”
