Bedford's Westview raises funds by hosting car show

The Bedford Westview Center and Family Rehabilitation Center Family Day Car and Bike Show Saturday featured a variety of vehicles. This was the second year for the fundraiser that supports the Westview activity department.

Larry Mitchell brought the rigid frame chopper with a 1964 pan head engine that he built. Mitchell said he wanted to duplicate the chopper Peter Fonda rides in the film "Easy Rider."

Mitchell's helmet is a replica of the one Fonda wore. He also brought a framed picture from the movie. Mitchell said the bike took him between four and five months to assemble after he got all the parts together. He had the sissy bar re-chromed and installed disc brakes instead of the original drum brakes. The paint work was done by Duane Smith of Ellettsville.

The pastor of the Ellettsville House of Prayer is not done pulling inspiration from "Easy Rider." Next, he said, he plans to build a replica of the bike Dennis Hopper rode.

Another entrant displayed a framed photo, this one of the old Brown's Gulf Service Station, in the trunk of his car.

Chris Peters, an RN and MDS coordinator for Westview, brought his 1960 Nash Metropolitan, which he's owned for about two years.
