Belmont Library will temporarily shut down for major expansion project
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One of Portland’s busiest libraries will close for about a year and a half as it undergoes expansion.
Multnomah County’s Belmont Library on Southeast Cesar Estrada Chavez Boulevard will only offer door service from Aug. 31 through Sept. 7, before closing to the public the following day in preparation for a $28 million makeover.

According to the Multnomah County Library, this site currently features “one of the smallest footprints” — at approximately 6,000 square feet — despite being one of the most active locations.
But by the end of the project, the building will more than double in size to about 15,000 square feet. Construction crews will preserve the original building that was last renovated in 2000, and also add a second floor to the site.

Additionally, “Community Design Advocates” have advised the county to update the technology and internet offered at the library. A new teen area, family play and learning area, meeting spaces and artwork are among the other planned improvements.
“Belmont Library is one of the busiest libraries and serves an active role in the community every single day,” Interim Director of Libraries Annie Lewis said in a statement. “As Belmont undergoes an exciting renovation and expansion, this updated library will be a truly beautiful and impactful place for everyone.”
Portland architecture firm Bora is behind the design, while Howard S. Wright — within the Balfour Beatty company — will spearhead construction.
Multnomah County sees rise in unlicensed food carts in Portland
The library is slated to reopen in spring 2026. Throughout the closure, the county will offer limited services including book returns and wireless printing at 3557 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Officials encourage Belmont-area residents to visit the Central and Holgate libraries if they need additional services.
