Beyoncé Sings A Capella Version Of “Freedom” In New Kamala Harris Campaign Video

Whoever told Kamala Harris to choose Beyoncé’s “Freedom” as her campaign anthem deserves a raise. The 2016 empowerment record appeared again during a video shown on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

Unlike the studio version that was used when Harris first announced her presidential campaign, the version from Monday (Aug. 19) featured Beyoncé singing the record a capella initially. As she sang over a montage of photos and video clips, a voice narrated, “What kind of America do we want? One where we’re divided, angry, depressed? Come on, we’re Americans. Fascism? We conquered it. The moon? Landed on it. The future? Building it. Freedom? Nobody loves it more, and we fight for it.”

It continued, “Freedom from control. Freedom from extremism and fear.” Harris chimed in, “Extremists want to take us back, but we are not going back” as Bey blared in the background, “Ima keep running ’cause a winner don’t quit on themselves.”

The video concluded with Harris asking, “Do we believe in the promise of America and are we ready to fight for it?,” alongside with her campaign slogan, “When we fight, we win.”

Harris also made a surprise appearance at the DNC last night. Wearing a tan suit, she walked out to “Freedom,” smiling and waving.

“I want to kick us off by celebrating our incredible President Joe Biden,” Harris began. “Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation and for all you will continue to do. We are forever grateful to you.”

Madam Vice President continued, “Looking out at everyone tonight, I see the beauty of our great nation. People from every corner of our country and every walk of life are here united by our shared vision for the future of country and this November, we will come together and declare with one voice as one people—we are moving forward with optimism, hope, and faith so guided by our love of country knowing we all have so much more in common than what separates us. Let us fight for the ideals we hold dear and let us always remember: when we fight, we win.”

It felt fitting for Harris to rock a tan suit, considering the controversy that enveloped President Obama when he stepped out wearing a tan suit during his stint as president. He and former First Lady Michelle Obama are set to speak at the DNC tonight, along with second gentleman Doug Emhoff and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, per NBC News.
