3 QUESTIONS
...about the new inflation data
Post Malone released his country album F-1 Trillion this past Friday. I asked entertainment reporter Kelsey Weekman about the artist’s big genre change.
Anthony: What does the latest data tell us about inflation, and is it good news or bad news overall?
Molly: After reviewing the data, I’d say that overall, it’s good. Prices rose 2.9% in July compared to a year ago. That’s the lowest inflation rate we’ve had in more than three years.
Anthony: On which items should people expect less of a sting from surging prices? And where are they still high?
Molly: I saw some welcome relief on big-ticket items, like cars, electronics and appliances. Plus, some — but not all — foods. Price increases on ham, potatoes and rice have eased, while the price of beef continues to rise. Meanwhile, car insurance is still up almost 20% over last year.
Anthony: What does it all mean for inflation over the next few months? Should we expect more relief?
Molly: This is the third straight month we’ve seen encouraging data. That’s a sign that inflation is on a sustainable downward path.
