New Bills stadium: How big will they make the bison statues?
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Just how big will the bison statues outside the new Buffalo Bills stadium be? The organization provided more information on one of fans’ burning questions in a new video released Tuesday.
Bills SVP of design Frank Cravotta said the bison statues are currently scaled to 16 feet tall, adding he feels that size “works for a variety of reasons.”

“If you were to look across at the stadium out in front, you’re going to have the park. … What we want to do is kind of have everything that is important in the frame around that as you’re walking through,” Cravotta said.
Cravotta referenced the “World’s Largest Buffalo Statue,” a 26-foot-tall behemoth in North Dakota, as a loose inspiration for what the Bills intend to erect. However, he added that the North Dakota statute has “no emotion” and “no detail.”

“If you were to create a bison that is 40 feet tall, right, you’re kind of then taking all of the rest of what we’re doing out of proportion,” Cravotta said. “The stadium would be tiny behind it. So the idea was that like, we have to do something cool, but cool doesn’t have to be the world’s largest.”
The video showcased a scaled-down model of what the bison could look like, including representations of people next to it for a size comparison.
The model features the bison seemingly getting ready to charge with noticeable detail in the animal’s face, fur and tail. Cravotta said that appropriate-sized statues can have an “incredible amount of detail” that would be lost if they were approaching “world’s largest” territory.
“The whole piece is actually angled and turning down, and if you can imagine the other one next to it would be doing maybe the same thing, both kind of charging,” Cravotta said. “It has action. … I think this will give people a cool sneak peek, early concept, a vision. What it will help show is that this is built for Buffalo.”
