Black bear spotted around Amherst has left the area
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A black bear that was spotted in the area of Hopkins Road in Amherst Tuesday morning left the area around dusk on Tuesday, the Department of Environmental Conservation said Wednesday.
A DEC environmental conservation police officer saw the bear heading north and its current location is unknown, the DEC said.
Officers and Amherst Animal Control were on the scene Tuesday morning monitoring the bear, according to police.
WIVB News 4 first received reports of the bear just after 10:50 a.m.
Police warned that bears are usually docile but may be aggressive if cornered. If you see the bear, police advise to leave it an escape route.
If the bear returns to the area, the DEC encourages residents to contact DEC regional wildlife at (716) 379-6402.
