‘Blast’ sounds expected to be more frequent in Portage, Trumbull County for several days

NEWTON FALLS, Ohio (WJW) – ‘Blast’ sounds commonly heard in Trumbull and Portage counties coming from the Camp James A. Garfield Joint Military Training Center are expected to be louder and more frequent over the next week.
According to a press release from the Ohio Army National Guard, explosives and hand grenades will be used during training that is scheduled to take place Thursday, July 11 through Friday, July 19.

“Sounds from the explosions may be heard farther away than what occurs during normal operations,” read the release. “There will be intermittent explosions and gunfire at the facility during annual training season, which typically runs through September.”

Camp James A. Garfield is an Ohio Army National Guard training site located on about 21,000 acres off State Route 5 near Ravenna and Newton Falls. On the property are small arms weapons ranges and permanent facilities designed for Army and other Department of Defense training.
