Blood drive hosted in honor of fallen Independence Officer Cody Allen

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Independence Police Department and Community Blood Center (CBC) are hosting a blood drive Wednesday in honor of fallen Officer Cody Allen who was killed in the line of duty in February.

Officer Allen’s family encourages Independence and Kansas City residents to donate and help other police officers who need blood transfusions after being injured on the job.

Donating only takes one hour, and a single donation can save multiple lives.

According to the CBC, almost one in seven hospital admissions require a blood transfusion, which typically goes to cancer patients, accident, burn or trauma victims, newborn babies, surgery patients, and many more who suffer from diseases or traumatic injuries.

Blood donors can donate every 56 days, and platelet donors can donate twice a month. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration lifted many eligibility restrictions for people who lived in Europe over a specific period of time, allowing more people to donate and give back to those who serve their communities.

To determine whether you are able to donate, visit savealifenow.org or call (800) 688-0900.
