WILLARD, Utah (ABC4) — The body of a 51-year-old man who went missing at Willard Bay State Park on Saturday has been found, according to Utah Division of State Parks.

Robert Mittendorf went missing just before 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. According to UDSP, Mittendorf had been swimming with his son near their boat when they got caught in a sudden storm. The two were separated but his son was able to swim back to the boat. The son tried to go back to his father with a life jacket, but Mittendorf never resurfaced.

Search crews immediately began efforts to find Mittendorf, which continued until Mittendorf was found early Tuesday morning, Aug. 6. Officials said the murky water conditions complicated the search. His body was not recovered until this morning, Aug. 8, in the southeastern corner of the bay, known as Freeway Bay.

During the search and recovery efforts, the South Marina at Willard State Park was shut down.

In a press release updating the search efforts, the Utah Division of State Parks reminded the public to be careful when recreating in Utah’s water.

“Always recreate with a buddy, wear your life jacket, and stay aware of weather conditions,” the Division said in the release. “It’s essential to be prepared with the appropriate safety gear and ensure someone knows your location and expected return time.”
