Boil water order, water use restrictions in place for parts of Chautauqua County
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Chautauqua County Health Department has announced that a boil water order and a water conservation order is in place for some areas in connection with a main water break that occurred on Monday.
Those living on Webster, Ellicott or Dahlberg Roads must boil their water until further notice, meanwhile those living in the Town of Portland or the the Village of Brocton are asked to reduce their water usage.
The health department says those affected by the boil water order should bring their water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before use. This includes water for consumption, as well as brushing teeth, cooking, washing dishes by hand and making ice.
Water is safe for bathing, laundry and dishwashers that reach 170 degrees with a full dry cycle.
Those in Portland and Brocton are asked to reduce their water usage by 50% to reduce the draw on the storage tank until further notice. Residents can reduce water by using paper plates, going to the laundromat, and taking shorter showers.
The health department says the orders are in place due to a water break that occurred Monday afternoon. Boiling water kills bacteria that could have entered the system while the pressure was low.
The source of the break has been located and is under repair, according to the health department. They say after the system has been fixed, the system will be flushed and the water will be tested for bacteria.
Residents will be informed when the orders are up.
