23-year-old man capsizes, drowns in Kansas City pond, 8-year-old safe

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Just before 6 p.m. on August 10, the Kansas City Fire Department responded to a report of a water rescue and possible drowning on 150 Highway just west of Horridge Road.

FOX4 Forecast: Cool clouds stick around

KCFD reports that upon arrival, they learned that two people were canoeing in a pond when it overturned. One 8-year-old child was able to make it to the bank and self-extricate. The other victim, 23, was not able to swim to shore, was overcome and drowned.

Neither victim was wearing a life jacket, according to KCFD.

KCFD put swimmers in the water and searched the last known location. MSHP then put a water patrol boat in the water to search with sonar.

KCFD says it used a search dog, which quickly hit on a location. This allowed MSHP to locate and identify the victim on sonar and retrieve the body.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reportedly located and recovered the victim in the pond at around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday night.

KCFD would like to stress to the public to wear a life jacket any time you’re in a large body of water.

This is an ongoing investigation. FOX4 will provide updates as they’re made available.
