Brett Favre slams Biden, Harris in comments at Green Bay Trump rally
As Brett Favre took the stage at former President Donald Trump's rally outside Green Bay Wednesday night, the Hall of Fame ex-Packers quarterback basked in the attention of excited fans and slammed Trump's foe in next week's election.
“It’s an honor to be back here where it all started to campaign with the next president of the United States, Donald J. Trump,” he told the crowd at the Resch Center in the Green Bay suburb of Ashwaubenon.
The rally took place less than a week before Tuesday’s election that will pit Trump against Vice President Kamala Harris.
The candidates and their campaigns are each crisscrossing this critical swing state in the final days before the election, with Harris also holding a rally Wednesday night in Madison.
Favre compared the Packers to Trump’s organization, saying they’re both winners.
And he slammed President Joe Biden’s comments in which he appeared to refer to Trump's supporters as “garbage” when addressing offensive comments comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made at Trump’s rally on Sunday. Hinchcliffe had called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage."
Biden and the White House quickly sought to clarify that Biden was referencing Hinchcliffe specifically.
Favre, though, told supporters Wednesday that Biden’s message was that “we’re garbage.”
“I can assure you, we’re not garbage,” Favre said. “How dare he say that? Looking out, I see police officers, teachers, nurses, grandparents, students. I see everyday Americans that make this country great.”
He said he was getting involved because of the high stakes of Tuesday’s election.
Favre also slammed Harris, saying it would be “insane to give Kamala four more years in office.”
“It’s time to bench Kamala and put in the star quarterback,” he said.
When Trump took the stage, he praised Favre as a "real" leader and lauded the strength of the former football player's handshake.
"Man, does he have a hand, you know?" Trump said. "This guy shook my hand, his fingers are like sausages. No wonder he can throw the ball so hard."
Trump also commented on the "bigger" applause Favre got compared to Trump.
Favre played 20 years in the NFL, beginning his career with the Atlanta Falcons before being traded to the Packers in his second year, a transaction that changed the course of the organization. He became the first player in NFL history to win three straight MVP awards and turned the Packers into a perennial contender. Favre led Green Bay to a Super Bowl title after the 1996 season, its first in 35 years, and another Super Bowl appearance in 1997.
The Packers traded him to the New York Jets after he came out of retirement in 2008. He spent one season there before playing the final two years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings.
Favre, 55, announced last month that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a movement disorder that affects the nervous system.
He announced the diagnosis during testimony at a congressional committee meeting about the misuse of federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funds in Mississippi.
Favre, a native of Mississippi, is embroiled in the scandal but has not been charged with a crime. He has denied wrongdoing.
