Brookside community shocked, demanding change amid Shaun Brady killing
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Neighbors in the city’s Brookside neighborhood are calling for immediate change.
This comes after a popular chef, 44-year-old Shaun Brady, was killed on Wednesday evening. Brady was shot outside Brady and Fox, the restaurant he’s operated for two years. Neighbors are remembering him fondly. Brady leaves behind two children.
Wednesday’s shooting has neighbors in shock, some of whom complain there’s not enough being done to stop crime from rising in their area of the city. Employees at Brady and Fox weren’t able to speak with FOX4 News on Thursday.
Juvenile charged in deadly shooting of Kansas City restaurant owner
“I didn’t sleep last night. This is something that’s still new,” Billy Woods, a maintenance worker at the building said.
Court records from Thursday evening show the Jackson County Juvenile Officer has charged one juvenile male with second-degree murder in connection with this case, as well as charges of car theft and armed criminal action.
Woods is among the people who think of Brady’s generosity first, and his status as a chef second.
FOX4 News viewers will remember his many appearances on Signal Hill, too, most of which were tied to the annual Kansas City Irish Fest.
Kansas City Police say Brady was shot after he spotted two teenagers attempting to steal a car from the parking lot behind the restaurant. Woods said the car belonged to Brady, and he’d spotted the incident while taking out the trash. Police later recovered the car.
“He was very giving and willing to help anyone out. He would have given you the shirt off his back. It’s just heart-wrenching to see him go down the way he did. I’ve lost a true friend,” Woods added.

“He was a super sweet guy. He would come in and get flowers. He was always really generous with us when we went to get food,” Sarah Sahli, who operates Bergamot & Ivy, the florist across the street, said.
“He will definitely be missed. He was a really nice guy.”
Brookside homeowners and merchants continue to complain about crime being on the uptick. KCPD officers were at the CVS location on Brookside seven days ago, when a car smashed through the store’s front window. Police believe the driver intended to steal the store’s ATM.
“The police know that these break-ins and car thefts are up. This one was in the middle of the day. Who would think that, in the middle of the day, you’d get shot outside your business?” Frederick Thompson, who’s lived on Brookside for 40 years, said.
