Buffalo man admits to making purchases on illicit online marketplace

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man pleaded guilty to possessing unauthorized access devices after he purchased stolen account credentials for PayPal, Amazon, and Venmo on an illicit online marketplace, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

42-year-old Corey Robert Dodge also purchased account information for FedEx, eBay, eTrade, Chase, Etsy, Walmart and Tracfone.

Officials said Dodge, known online as Cakesbaylor, used Genesis Market to purchase 14 packages including stolen account credentials between Mar. 2020 and May 2021.

The marketplace packages information from malware-infected computers around the world and sells it for virtual currency, such as bitcoin. Information includes computer and mobile device identifiers as well as email addresses, usernames and passwords.

Dodge pleaded guilty to possessing 15 or more unauthorized access devices as well as a drug charge. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine when he is sentenced April 29.
