Buffalo man indicted for shooting that left 1 dead, 2 injured
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man was arraigned on Monday for allegedly killing one victim and injuring two others during a shooting in the Willert Park neighborhood in July 2023, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Ernest Brown, 41, was arraigned on a sealed indictment charging him with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Around 3 a.m. on July 22, 2023, Buffalo police responded to a reported shooting on Genesee Street near Mortimer Street, where three people were found shot outside of a tavern, according to the district attorney’s office.
Officials said a 33-year-old male and a 44-year-old male were taken by ambulance to ECMC where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. The third victim, 31-year-old Devin Lockwood, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The district attorney’s office said Brown and his co-defendant, 25-year-old Twandrell L. Dean, of Buffalo, were allegedly acting in concert together. They are accused of firing an illegal weapon with the intent to cause the death of the victim.
Dean was previously arrested on an indictment warrant and was arraigned on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon on Sept. 8, 2023.
Brown and Dean could face a maximum of 25 years to life in prison, if convicted of the highest charge.
Brown is scheduled to return to court for a pre-trial conference on July 16 and was held without bail. Dean has been remanded since his arraignment and is scheduled to return before a judge on Aug. 7.
