Buffalo man sentenced to 23 years for fatal shooting

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man was sentenced to over 20 years in prison Monday in connection with a 2023 shooting that left one man dead and another injured, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Just before 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 5, 30-year-old Jerry Simpson shot and killed 37-year-old Jermaine Underwood with an illegal gun on the 900 block of Kensington Avenue. The second victim, a 31-year-old man, sustained injuries to his legs. He was treated and later released from ECMC.

Simpson originally pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree manslaughter on May 16, 2024. He was sentenced Friday to 23 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
