Buffalo man stole nearly $500K for 11 customers of mobile banking service
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man now living in Melbourne, Florida, pleaded guilty to bank fraud after he allegedly stole nearly $500,000 for 11 customers of a mobile banking service, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.
Between Dec. 28, 2021 and Jan. 6, 2022, 32-year-old Joshua Parra created 94 fictitious disputed transactions on behalf of 11 customers of financial technology company Fintech Company 1. None of the disputes were justified and they almost all amounted to $5,000 each.
Funds were transferred to the 11 customers from settlement accounts held at Bancorp and Stride Bank. The bank lost around $459,000 in total, officials said.
Sentencing has yet to be scheduled. Parra faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
