Car totaled after sinking into Lake Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — No one was hurt on Thursday after a car went into Lake Springfield.

The Springfield Fire Department posted pictures and details of the water rescue on their Facebook page Friday. The car went into the water at a local boat ramp and became submerged.

Medical helicopter requested in Ford County crash

No one was hurt, but the car was deemed a total loss.

The fire department also took the opportunity to share a few boat and water safety tips:

  • Always wear a life jacket near or on the water, regardless of swimming ability

  • Supervise children closely around the water and teach them to swim at an early age

  • Be aware of water conditions and currents, which can change rapidly

  • Ensure all boat passengers have properly fitting life jackets

  • Never drink alcohol while driving a boat

  • Familiarize yourself with local boating laws and regulations
