Carthage woman charged in connection to daughter-in-law’s murder
MIAMI COUNTY, Kan. — A Carthage woman is charged with helping her son cover-up and evade authorities in her daughter-in-law’s murder.
Kansas prosecutors charged Heather McJunkins, 46, with one count of obstructing apprehension or prosecution, and one count of interference with a law enforcement officer by concealing or destroying evidence of a felony.
McJunkins is the mother of Gavino Macias, 23, who is facing second degree murder charges in Miami County, Kansas.
The new charges are connected to the discovery of Macias’s wife’s body in a camper trailer last month in Carthage.

Macias is accused of killing Kenia Lopez, 24, of Carthage, near Louisburg, Kansas, and then driving her body back to Carthage. He is scheduled to be back in a Miami County court in August for a preliminary hearing.
McJunkins waived extradition and will be transported to Kansas. A court date for McJunkins has not yet been set.
