CBS Evening News Announces Departure of Longtime Anchor

A longtime CBS Evening News anchor will soon depart her current role.

On Tuesday, July 30, news broke that Norah O'Donnell will step down from her anchor and managing editor positions at CBS Evening News at the end of election season.

She will take on a new role as a senior correspondent on the heels of CBS News ' parent company, Paramount Global, merging with Skydance Media.

“I have spent 12 years in the anchor chair here at CBS News, tied to a daily broadcast and the rigors of a relentless news cycle,” O'Donnell wrote in a message to staff members on Tuesday. “It’s time to do something different."

"This presidential election will be my seventh as a journalist," she added, "and for many of us in this business we tend to look at our careers in terms of these milestone events.”

In the memo, O'Donnell listed some of CBS Evening News' achievements during her time at the helm.

“Together, our team has won Emmy, Murrow, and DuPont awards. We managed to anchor in-studio through COVID; we took the broadcast on the road from aircraft carriers to the Middle East, and around the world," she detailed. "We were privileged to conduct a historic interview with Pope Francis. There’s so much work to be proud of!"

The good news for those who enjoy O'Donnell on CBS Evening News is they still have time before she officially steps down. She will continue as the anchor for major coverage leading up to the 2024 Election—including the Democratic National Convention and Election Night.

When she begins her senior correspondent role, O'Donnell will contribute to Evening News, as well as other CBS News programs and 60 Minutes.

As of writing, a replacement for O'Donnell has not been announced.
