Central IL community honors lives lost in 9/11 attacks, 23 years later
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Today marks 23 years since thousands died in the 9/11 attacks. Many here in Central Illinois spent their morning honoring those lives lost with various ceremonies.
The ceremony at West Side Park started at 8:46 AM which was exactly the time Flight 11 struck the north tower of the World Trade Center.
Ceremonies mark 9/11 anniversary
“I want to tell the first responders, thank them for their service and to continue to serve,” said Post 559 Commander George Love. “They put it on the line every day, every single day.”
Champaign Fire Chief Andy Quarnstrom said every 9/11 anniversary since has brought Champaign Fire and Police out to remember the heroes.
“I was actually on duty on 9/11 of 2001 and remember it fondly,” Quarnstrom said.
More than two decades have passed since the national tragedy. First responders said this day always reminds them of the importance of unity.
“Be the person you were on September 12th of 2001, right,” said Quarnstrom. “I think we all remember how together America was at that point after such a tragic event, I think that those are important words to live by.”
He said it’s important to pass on the lessons of sacrifice. Today’s a day of silent reflection and a day to recognize that those who have died may be gone, but are never forgotten.
