ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Chaz Bono — the son of Sonny and Cher — joined East House’s annual Hope and Recovery luncheon Thursday as the keynote speaker.

The annual fundraising event aims to celebrate people recovering from mental health and substance use disorders, not just in East House programs but throughout the community.

Bono has been openly out in the LGBT community for many years, serving at one point as the media director at GLAAD, but Thursday marks the first time he has publicly spoken about his substance use disorder.

News 8 asked him what originally led him to seek help.

“I believe hitting some kind of bottom or having some type of moment of clarity where you can finally see yourself and see where your life is, that’s what was key to me,” he said. “It wasn’t a dramatic moment either. It was just a moment when I was finally able to look at myself.”

He says after 12 years of sobriety, he believes telling people recovery is possible is important, and not something anyone needs to do alone. If you or anyone you know needs help with recovery, you can call the East House Affinity Place Warm Line at (585) 563-7470 at any time of day.
