BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Cheektowaga woman was sentenced Monday morning to 3 1/3 years to 10 years in prison, as well as an indefinite license revocation, for causing a crash that killed a local teacher earlier this year, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office announced.

According to officials, 51-year-old Jennifer Hylkema of Lockport was driving on the 6300 block of Transit Road on Feb. 26 when she was struck. She later died at the hospital. Her son, who was also in the vehicle, was taken to ECMC to be treated and released.

Hylkema spent 25 years teaching at Stanley G. Falk Schools.

25-year-old Alondra Ramirez-Santiago was driving southbound on Transit when she caused the crash. Police responded to the collision between Cloverleaf Drive and Rehm Road in Cheektowaga around 9 p.m. Officials said Ramirez-Santiago was under the influence of alcohol and was driving recklessly without her headlights on when the crash occurred.

Ramirez-Santiago pleaded guilty to all counts in the indictment against her in July.
