Chicago airports to welcome nearly 2 million passengers for July 4 weekend

CHICAGO — Nearly two million flyers will pass through Chicago’s airports this July 4 weekend, based on airline projections.

According to the city’s Department of Aviation, Chicago’s airports will welcome 1.75 million passengers over the extended Independence Day weekend. The high volume of passengers is a 10.4% increase compared to 2023.

O’Hare expects 1.43 million passengers, while Midway will welcome nearly 320,000 people July 3-8.

Wednesday, July 3 is expected to be the busiest day of travel.

Going.com reports that Fourth of July weekend travel could break a TSA record set this year on the Friday before Memorial Day (May 24). Nationwide, the Tuesday and Wednesday before July 4 could see upwards of three million passengers travel per day and become the new record holder for the single busiest day, the travel site says. It would be the first time three million people passed through TSA in a single travel day.
