City adding new bike lanes, more safety features to Louisiana Boulevard

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque will add new bike lanes and more safety features to Louisiana Boulevard starting this week.

The city said Louisiana will be restriped to create new bike lanes, and Intelligent Transportation Systems will be added to improve communication between traffic signals. The changes are part of the City’s Vision Zero program, aimed at reducing pedestrian deaths and creating safer streets.

“This is a meaningful, community-driven project,” Valerie Hermanson, Public Works Strategic program manager and Vision Zero coordinator, said in a news release. “The community told us what they wanted: safer streets, slower traffic, and better pedestrian and transit options. This project can be a model for how we look at roads and design our streets to help people move in safer and more efficient ways throughout our city.”

The changes will be implemented on Louisiana Boulevard from Gibson to Central. During the work, at least one lane will be open in both directions on Louisiana. According to the city, the Louisiana corridor has been one of the most dangerous in the city for pedestrians and cyclists, and it is one of the highest-priority roads on the High Fatal and Injury Network map.

The $1 million project is scheduled to last 45 days and is the first major project to be paid for through funds generated from the Automated Speed Enforcement program.
