City of New Orleans releases results of 2024 Music Census
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The City of New Orleans has released its findings in its 2024 New Orleans Music Census.
City officials said the census is a community-led study that took place from May to June and included 1,504 responses from residents involved in New Orleans’ music industry. They said the goal of the study was to gain insight into the city’s music ecosystem.
Some key findings from the census include areas of economic impact, venue diversity, professional development needs, livability and career concerns and weather interruptions.

According to the study, respondents in the music industry generate $26 million and contribute $12 million “through career-related expenses.” However, the study notes that 55% of respondents work outside the music industry, with 73% of those people relying on other jobs as their main source of income.
The study also found that the city has a diverse venue landscape compared to other cities that participated in the study. The study states that venues host about 163 events per year but face challenges including the permitting process and “time-consuming inefficiencies.”
City leaders said the study found that 62% of respondents expressed a desire for better connections with industry services including links to agencies and record labels, and 51% showed interest in connecting with other creative industries.
The study concluded that 38% of respondents said they struggle with making rent and mortgage payments and 86% said they are concerned about low or uncertain pay. The study notes that the local ecosystem “is one of the most experienced in the country, with 83 percent of census respondents having more than 10 years of experience in music. “

According to the study, 3% of venue and presenter and respondents said the weather has never impacted their events while 41% said the weather has interrupted their events more than 25% of the time.
Based on the census’s findings, city leaders said they identified some areas for growth in the music scene, including re-establishing the Music and Entertainment Commission, making the musician loading zone permit more accessible, addressing regulatory barriers, “supporting the development of music hubs” and offering workshops, seminars and mentorship programs for professional development.
