City of Tyler starts replacing water meters

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Thousands of water meters are being replaced in the city of Tyler.

The project was approved last December, and the city started changing out the old units this week. City staff say there are around 40,000 in the city, but around 27% currently have issues.

Tyler Water Utilities to begin replacing city water meters this month

“We have about 11,000 meters that need to be replaced,” Tyler Chief Financial Officer Keidric Trimble said. “Either they’re not sending the signal to our water billing office or they’re reading zero consumption.”

The crew said they have already replaced more than 100 meters, with many more to come. The city first approved 8,000 meters for the change, but they say they might be able to replace more.

“Originally 8000 meters, now we’ve found an additional million dollars of funding to up that 11 thousand meters for this year with TechServ, who is our contractor that is replacing meters,” Tyler Utilities Project Engineer Jacob Yanker said.

If your water meter is scheduled to be replaced the city says you will first receive a letter in the mail.

“Next is they are going to get a door hanger hung on their door,” said Yanker. “That’s going to be one to two weeks before the replacement.”

Yanker tells us that it shouldn’t take long to do the switch, taking only 30 to 60 minutes. He also says if people feel their water bill is incorrect or if they have questions, they should reach out to Tyler Water Utilities.
