Comey hints special counsel is looking into Trump for possible obstruction
Former FBI Director James Comey declined to give his opinion on whether President Trump had tried to obstruct justice in asking Comey to drop an investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, but suggested the issue is being looked into by special counsel Robert Mueller.
Comey testified that Trump had summoned him for a private conversation at the White House in February, one day after Flynn resigned over undisclosed contacts with Russian officials, and told him, “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”
During a public hearing before the Senate intelligence committee Thursday, Comey confirmed that Flynn was “in legal jeopardy” at the time, and was the subject of an “open criminal investigation.”
Asked whether he believed the president was trying to obstruct justice with his request to “let this go,” Comey said, “I don’t think it’s for me to say whether the conversation I had with the president was an effort to obstruct.”
“I took it as very disturbing thing, very concerning,” he continued. “But that’s a conclusion I’m sure the special counsel will work towards.”
