When will construction begin on the Greenville Loop Road roundabout? | MyReporter
Editor’s note: This is a corrected version. In the original, the timeline for construction was incorrect.
The roundabout that will connect Pine Grove Drive to Greenville Loop Road is part of the city of Wilmington’s larger Pine Grove Drive project.
Here's what we know.
When was the contract approved?
The Wilmington City Council approved an engineering contract in early 2020 to design four projects based on results from a comprehensive traffic analysis. The council approved design upgrades that will improve traffic flow, reduce the number of vehicular conflict points, and improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.
The Pine Grove Project's components including the roundabout "will function together to improve traffic flow along the Pine Grove corridor," according to information from project staff.
Where exactly will it be located?
The roundabout will sit at the intersection of Pine Grove Drive and Greenville Loop Road where the Lowes Foods, Exxon and Dollar General are located.
The greater project will also include an additional southbound lane on Pine Drove Drive between Greenville Loop Road and Beasley Road. The intersection of Pine Grove Drive and Holly Tree Road will also receive traffic signal improvements, additional turn lanes and a signalized U-turn movement.
Both intersections will include marked crosswalks.
When will the work begin?
Pine Grove Drive South is the latter half of the project. The Pine Grove Drive North portion is expected to break ground with construction beginning in fall 2024.
The southern portion of the project's construction is expected to begin in spring 2025 and will last about 14 months, according to the city's website.
How is the project being funded?
The Pine Grove Drive project is part of the 2014 voter-approved transportation bond-funded projects. It includes intersection improvements in and around Pine Grove Drive.
The cost for the project will be known after the city receives bids, which is expected in early 2025, according to information provided by city Communications Director Jerod Patterson from project staff.
