Construction halted on DeGaulle Manor complex in Algiers

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Algiers residents are hoping that a city council resolution will bring an end to ongoing safety concerns at the abandoned Degaulle Manor Apartments.

“It’s kind of scary to walk down there at a certain time,” said Algiers resident Ricky Seals.

Work crews started demolishing the apartments back in May, but then the work stopped with Durr Heavy Construction, the company contracted with the project, saying they couldn’t complete the job.

Neighbors say that something has to be done to get rid of the eyesore permanently.

“The majority would want it to be taken down. Like I said, there is a lot going on there. All, from this area to the apartment, is just trash,” said Seals.

On Thursday, the New Orleans City Council passed a motion declaring the remaining Degaulle Manor structures “an imminent threat” to nearby residents and property. They authorized the Department of Code Enforcement to secure bids to complete the demolition.

“They have a daycare right next door to it, and they haven’t done anything with it for years. It’s just been sitting there, it’s nothing but junk. So, get another contractor and get it down,” said an Algiers resident.

Residents add the work can’t resume soon enough.

“People go in and out of those buildings. It gets wild and they are doing all kinds of crazy things out there. Everything is blocked between the trees and the apartment. Like I said, when the sun is going down, you can’t see what’s coming towards you, but you hear a lot,” said Seals.

Other residents say that the demolition is a step in the right direction, but there is more work that needs to be done. This includes making sure the grass on the property is regularly cut.

“As long as it’s demolished, yes. Keep up the land and landscape. Keeping it looking nice around there,” said an Algiers resident.

WGNO reached out to code enforcement to find out when the demolition could resume, but has not heard back.
