SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Sangamon County Coroner has released the name of a Springfield woman who was shot by a Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy over the weekend.
Coroner Jim Allmon said the woman was 36-year-old Sonya Massey. Sangamon County officials confirmed that a deputy shot Massey at her home on Hoover Avenue Saturday at 1:21 a.m. and she died 25 minutes later at 1:47 a.m. in the emergency room of HSHS St. John’s Hospital. An autopsy performed Monday confirmed a single gunshot wound as the cause of death.

Deputies initially responded to Massey’s home in response to a 911 call about a reported “prowler,” and officials said they got there 30 minutes before the deadly shooting happened. Neither the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office nor the Illinois State Police have given any information on what happened during those 30 minutes.
Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell confirmed the two deputies involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation, but he, his office and the Illinois State Police have declined to answer further questions.
