PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Nearly a year after a woman went missing in Clark County, detectives are investigating a man’s connection to her presumed death, according to court records.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office first began searching for 32-year-old Alana Carroll after she disappeared in September 2023. Since then, court records provided to KOIN 6 News by the Clark County Clerk’s Office has named a person under investigation while Carroll is presumed dead.

“We can confirm that we presume Alana Carroll to be deceased and that we continue to actively investigate this case in an effort to locate her remains and discern her cause and manner of disappearance,” Ashley Korslien, a spokesperson for the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, said in a statement. “We have several leads that we are working, and we have identified a suspect in this case who is currently incarcerated on unrelated charges.”

Before Carroll went missing, deputies said in court documents she had been staying in “several residences in northern Clark County as she struggled with substance abuse issues.” Several witnesses told officers that Carroll had seen the person of interest in the case in Battle Ground, Washington, prior to her disappearance and that the pair knew each other “from the drug scene,” according to the court documents.

According to court documents, one witness told investigators the person of interest had called a friend “freaking out” while “not knowing what to do with the body in his trunk” after Carroll possibly overdosed sometime between August and October 2023.

Court records state the witness who received the call told detectives the person of interest had said, “I think she’s dead. I don’t really know,” before hanging up. The person of interest later said the body was in his trunk when he woke up, the witness told investigators, according to the court documents.

According to court documents, the person of interest had sold his black 2003 Honda Accord to Pick N Pull, a recycled auto parts dealer, on Sept. 11, 2023 and from there, the car was sent to a recycling facility and “shredded” more than a month later.

On July 24, 2024, detectives requested a search warrant of the suspect’s property. He has yet to be charged with a crime related to Carroll’s disappearance and is currently in custody on charges related to a separate incident.
