After the Virginia Department of Corrections chose to shut down the Augusta Correctional Center located in Craigsville, the town was stuck with millions in infrastructure debt related to the prison. The recently-passed Virginia budget granted the town $3.8 million to pay off the debt.

According to Fox, the budgeted money could be used to pay off the town’s loans as early as the first of July.

“It’s a real blessing to try to see that happening, to keep our town incorporated, to keep it moving,” the mayor said, adding that the council “had to crunch some major figures” in the Craigsville budget to make things work.

Fox noted that with the Correctional Center closing, the upcoming budget was more uncertain than previous years. The council unanimously approved the first reading of the budget, with operating expenses totaling $738,266.

The budget is expected to be approved during the next council meeting on July 1, with the council meeting moved to earlier in the week due to the Fourth of July.
