Crater Lake’s north entrance temporarily closes due to Middle Fork Fire

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The north entrance to Oregon’s iconic national park Crater Lake has temporarily closed as firefighters tackle the Middle Fork Fire nearby.

Although Crater Lake National Park remains open to visitors, its North Entrance Road will be closed for seven days starting Tuesday, according to the National Park Service.

The closure impacts the road from North Junction to the park boundary at Highway 138, and all other park roads are expected to remain open and accessible from Highway 62.

Officials say closing the northern entrance will “allow firefighters on the Middle Fork Fire to prepare control lines”

As of Tuesday morning, the Middle Fork Fire has burned 4,929 acres — or 7.7 square miles — with 0% containment.

“Fire crews will reduce fuels along the north-south route creating a defensible zone to keep the Middle Fork Fire from threatening park infrastructure and progressing further east,” the National Park Service shared in its announcement.
