Culinary union calls Trump’s pledge to end taxes on tips ‘wild campaign promises’
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Culinary Union Local 226 is calling former President Donald Trump’s pledge at his Las Vegas rally over the weekend to end taxes on tipped income nothing more than “wild campaign promises.”
The temperature was hot at Trump’s rally Sunday and so was some of the rhetoric. Trump, fresh off of his guilty verdict, whipped up the crowd with his widely reported statement on taxation and tips directly aimed at the thousands of Nevadans who depend on tips to supplement their income.
“So this is the first time I’ve said this, and for those hotel workers and people that get tips you’re going to be very happy because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on tips people making tips,” Trump said Sunday during a campaign rally at Sunset Park.
In an economy driven by tourism, such as Las Vegas, that kind of statement can be music to the ears of thousands of Culinary Union members who hold jobs as guest room attendants, cocktail and food servers, porters, bellmen, cooks, bartenders, laundry, and kitchen workers.
“For decades, the culinary union has fought for tipped workers’ rights and against unfair taxation,” union secretary-treasurer Ted Pappageorge said in a news release. “Relief is definitely needed for tip earners, but Nevada workers are smart enough to know the difference between real solutions and wild campaign promises from a convicted felon.”
The union represents 60,000 workers in Nevada, and 60% of the members are immigrants, and more than half are women, the union stated.
Nevada is one of seven swing states that could determine the election results. The Emerson College Polling released in May shows Trump with a slim 1% edge over Biden in Nevada. A CBS poll was conducted between June 5-7 and shows nationally Trump leads by 1% with the exception of the battleground states where Biden leads by 1 %.
