But this number changes based on political affiliation, with Republicans showing less support. And while most Americans favor stricter gun laws, a majority don’t want a handgun ban. The study notes that Americans favorability of stricter gun laws rises when mass shootings happen and quickly drop when they fade from the public’s memory.
