Daily Digit: The birth rate of children with unauthorized immigrant parents has fallen
Daily Digit is the story behind the numbers that make our world work. Today we’re looking at the children of unauthorized immigrants. A new study finds 250,000 children were born to unauthorized immigrants in 2016, the last year for which this information is available. This is a 36% decrease from its peak number in 2007. Babies born to unauthorized immigrants accounted for roughly 6% of all U.S. births in 2016. This information comes at a time when President Trump has announced he wants to end birthright citizenship. However, the majority of Americans say birthright citizenship should continue.
