Few magazines have the ability to grab onto the pulse of a rising cultural force as Rolling Stone, a publication that carries the earliest profiles of such icons as David Bowie.

In this exclusive clip from new series Rolling Stone: Stories From the Edge, Rolling Stone’s longtime contributing editor Cameron Crowe discusses what it was like to capture Bowie’s elusive, pioneering spirit in a cover interview for the magazine’s Feb. 12, 1976, issue.

Eerily, Bowie was able to accurately forecast the events surrounding his death.

“In one of our first interviews, it ended with me saying, ‘How do you think you’re going to die?'” recalls Crowe. “He told me, ‘I will handle that situation in just the right way, and it will not be just a random event. It will be something that I present to you in a certain way.”

Bowie, who died Jan. 10, 2016, did indeed do just that. He shocked the world with his passing — which was from a battle with cancer that he did not disclose to the public — and by offering his startling swan song, Blackstar, just two days before.

Rolling Stone: Stories From the Edge, a six-part series now available on iTunes, chronicles the last 50 years of American music, politics, and popular culture through the groundbreaking work of its writers, spotlighting the publication’s impact on society.

Narrated by Jeff Daniels and directed by Oscar winner Alex Gibney and Emmy winner Blair Foster, the series also features archival interviews with Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Britney Spears, and many more.
